I am graduating from college soon and I am looking to find a career related to public relations, marketing, media, etc. I have probably sent over 100 resumes so far and have not received one reply. From an experienced business person, what advice can you offer me? This can be anything related to
-interviews
-resume and cover letter preparation
-experience
-good places to look
-or just unique suggestions.
Anything would help…with the economy declining so fast and seeing so many people around me losing jobs and sources of incomes, I’m really frightened not only for myself, but for a possible second great depression. (sounds out there, but things aren’t getting much better.)
i would like to work in the music or entertainment industry( tv and film)
but i don’t want to be an actress or a singer. all i want to do is work for a company that works within the entertainment buisness. like working for a record label or a magazine.
i am interested in public or media relations/ communications.
i also like to write and design, so graphic design possibly.
i also like to edit stuff, such as movie and spreads.
any ideas of careers that would tie in with what i just explained?
I have a bachelor’s degree in Journalism (2001), have been working in sports marketing full-time since then (six years at one job and one at my present).
Mainly website management (design and writing), public relations (press releases), event management and assisting marketing director.
In general I like what I do, but don’t feel my marketable skills are worth much nowadays.
It’s great that I have steady work, at a good job but feel like my career is floundering a bit. And I’m not making much money.
Anyone can suggest a way to jump start my engine? Thanks for any and all ideas!
P.S.
I’m not one of those corporate-job types. Prefer more casual, but professional environments.
Grad degree might not be best option at this time. Two kids and a mortgage limit my time and money, plus the university is a 40+ minute drive after work (on a good day).
Project manager option is a good idea, though. Hadn’t considered it! Thanks, I’ll look into it.
I was talking to my Mass Communications professor this afternoon and he said he thought I’d be a good fit for the field of public relations - I tend to agree.
One thing I forgot to ask him was this: Should I keep my major of English if I want to go into PR? Or Journalism?
I don’t think I’ve ever heard of universities offering a Bachelors in Public Relations - or do they?
