I’m currently a first-year university student and I’ve always wanted to get into public relations. Can anyone give me some tips on what I should do in order to pursue this goal? Do I need to get a bcomm degree? What types of fields can I pursue in public relations (e.g. entertainment, finance)? And which of those will earn me the most money? Thanks, appreciate the help!

The marketing degree would be a business degree with a concentration in marketing, and I would most likely minor in mass communication. I am unsure if I want to go into a marketing career or a public relations career, but I feel the the marketing major covers more. If I were to change my mind later, I believe that it would be easier to major in a marketing and get a career in public relations than it would be to major in public relations and get a career in marketing. Am I correct?

Please explain the following if possible: How do you explain to a potential client the difference between their use of the generic term “public relations” (relating to ‘good PR’) and what a public relations practioner does. I am looking for a succinct answer that easily explains the difference in what many lay people think is PR and what a degreed professional is/does. So many people are confused in the use of the term “public relations” and sometimes it is quite difficult to explain. THANKS!
