How long can a PR stay outside canada?

I got my canadian immigration through
I am planning to come to canada in Jan 2009
and go back to Chile in Feb 2009
Should I need to have my PR card before I leave canada?
Please advise.

Your permanent resident status allows you to live in Canada, but there is also a time limit on how long you can live outside the country. To keep your status as a permanent resident, you must live in Canada for at least two years within a five-year period.

You can stay outside Canada for up to 1095 days (3 years) total in any rolling 5 year period. When you land as a PR, it normally takes around a month to get your PR card mailed to you. If you have friends or relatives in Canada, you can give their address and they can mail you your card when it arrives. If not, when you are ready to go and live in Canada, you need to apply for a PR travel document and then apply for the PR card again once you are in Canada for good.
