before doing loads of bench press my arms look thick in relation to my body, after my shoulders are wide and my arms look thinner next to my body, is this normal?

Yeah that sounds right .The bench Press is expanding your Upper frame including the Shoulders But what you need to do is Hold the bar in an Incline Position which will also work your arms .Hope this helps
