I’m in my second year of college majoring in PR. I am looking for an internship this summer but most companies seem to be looking for a junior or senior. I have a lot of leadership experience; was VP of a Business club and a student Senator of our Student Government. In addition I have a 3.7 GPA while working full-time. So, I look great on paper but wondering if I have a real shot at interning a year early. What kind of companies should I look for? What’s the BEST way to get the position?
What’s the best way for a sophmore to find an internship in Public Relations?

Non-profits are the way to go. They always need help. Get your resume ready and then do the research of what they need. You may end up doing less PR-related stuff, but it’s worth it.

The best way to find an internship is to approach the company/organization directly, rather than waiting for them to post an “internship wanted” ad. Perhaps the company has never thought of having an intern before — you could be their first! Decide which area you’d like to try. Is it theater? Is it healthcare? Is it sports? Then, be proactive. First, call the company’s PR department. VOLUNTEER your services, don’t expect to be paid. Oodles of years ago, before internship programs were developed, I had 11 internships throughout high school and college, some paid, most unpaid. And each one I got was by contacting them myself, directly. If you want more information, feel free to e-mail me.
