I know this sounds a bit weird but I was watching some show on MTV, and this girl was talking about how she’s the “PR girl” meaning the public relations girl.
What do people in that job do?
How much is their pay?
Can anyone be in a PR career field?
I was just wondering because I need to start thinking about my future, even though I’m just 17.

PR is is exatly what it sounds like
for example, what do u think of when u think of oil companies? are they greedy rich and ruthless bastards?
well, a PR person tries to change that image buy advising them on what they sould do to have better “public relations” such as givign to more charities and what not
like Mcdonals– u may think it’s an evil corp that sells unhealthy junk food. well their PR person may advise them to start selling salads, creating more charities and give more scholoarships so ppl think that they aren’t so bad, infact, they may even seem NICE
as for their pay, idk, but i’m sure to be in the PR feild, u defiantely have to be a people person, after all, u are trying to win their opinion for a living

First, I’d ask you if you enjoy writing and communicating with people, because that’s necessary in PR. You must have good grammar and spelling, too. Most PR people get college degrees in English or Communications. Some PR people may have journalism degrees. I’m sure your high school counselor or a local university could give you some information, too.
Almost every corporate business needs PR people, but so do hospitals, universities, non-profit organizations and, of course, the entertainment field. The actual work may vary from job to job, but basically, you would be the person to present your company to the world and make it look good. Keep in mind that you might be happier working for a company you believe in and respect rather than one of questionable integrity that you may have difficulty representing.
My daughter was trained as a journalist, but now does PR for a major university’s medical center writing their patient magazine. She feels some satisfaction in knowing she’s helping the patients as well as presenting the medical center to the public in a positive way.
You’re not too young to be figuring out what you want to do. Make a list of the things you enjoy doing and try to find a career that uses these skills. Remember that nothing is written in stone. You may start out in one career and decide to switch later and that’s okay. Good luck with your decision.
