Back in the day Puerto Rico & Cuba were very politically close. They both fought together from independence of Spain. In honor of that P.R. copied the Cuban flag and reverse it colors. The white star stands for the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico while the three sides of the equilateral triangle together represent the three branches of the Republican government (executive, legislative and judicial branches). The three red strips symbolize the blood that feeds those parts of the government. The two white stripes symbolizing the rights of man and the freedom of the individual, are a perpetual reminder of the need for vigilance of a democratic government is to be preserved.
it signifies the blood of the cubans that died fighting spain to get their independence. we thought that was so cool, so we wanted one of those flags for our own island. there’s a saying that says p.r. and cuba are two wings of the same bird. ( p.r. y cuba son dos alas de la misma pajara). so we use to copy stuff back and forth.
The red stiped mean the blood shed by the people fighting for Independence from Spain.
The white star represents the island itself in the middle of the blue triangle waters (bermuda triangle) that surround the island.
The white stripes represent the peace, liberty and independence of the peoples freedom after so many centuries of struggling for our rights and independence.
Actually both the flag from Cuba and PR were created at the same time due to the political and culture of the 17-18th century and even today. (for those whom are not clear which flag came first). Did you know that the Red,White, and Blue from the American flag was ‘borrowed’ from the colors of the French Revolution. So to an extent the flags of the Americas that carry the red/white/blue are influenced by the revolution due to the struggles and imperialism of the 18th century. There are other reasons for those colors as well.
