I am a freshman in college and I am currently majoring in English, but considering a career in public or media relations for a sports team. I was wondering if anyone in the field could share some insights as to the general nature of the job.
I have heard the job market is highly competitive for public relations executives, and my worst fear is graduating college and not being able to find a job.

My good friend, is in broadcasting for a major sports talk show. He started by volunteering to announce at his high school and any event he could volunteer for. He then started to network and making friends with people in the broadcasting industry, He does a lot of behind the sceen work at his present station and stands a good chance of getting his own program. It is very competitive. I would see if you can make an appointment with a broadcast personel or a director. Ask for just 20 minutes of their time. Ask all the questions be prepared to ask the best way to get into the industry, ask is there anything you can do as an intern at the station. just work yourself into the areana and start making friends and learning the trade. A combination of going to school and interning will put a foot into the door.

Public Relation Specialists: They must understand the attitudes and concerns of community, consumer, employee, and public interest groups and establish and maintain cooperative relationships with them and with representatives from print and broadcast journalism.
My suggestion is to do a lot of freelance work while attending college i.e. writing, marketing, advertising, etc. You should also either teach yourself computer graphics, desktop publishing, Microsoft movie maker, etc. Volunteer to help out with sports teams in your area. This will give you an acceptable track record when you go to apply for a job. If after all this you don’t go into public relations…your skills will be “off the chart” and you’ll get a great job anyway. Good Luck!

u r right it is highly competitive but it shouldn’t deter u from giving it a shot but I think the sooner u get started the better since u r still young and the experience u gain over the years will give u an edge, should be of use to u to get started, good luck.

Highly Competitive, No doubts !
But very interesting, as well as remunerative. You may Join a Large size Organisation, after your Masters in English or Journalism. Alternatively, Advertising and Publicity Company.
