You might actually be thinking of two different things. Public relations refers to communication management. Schools, hospitals, politicians, corporations, celebrities, human rights organizations - almost any place where you can work has some sort of public relations.
A PR person might do the following:
- bring information to the public about a corporation
- promote a politician to get election votes or campaign money
- inform the public of a fundraising event for a non-profit
- try to repair the reputation or address accusations against a well-known person.
Promotion is the other thing you might be thinking of. While it’s related to public relations a little, promotion is more closely related to sales and marketing. According to Wikipedia, promotion involves disseminating information about a product, product line, brand, or company.
So if you want to work for a club, and you want to be the person getting all the cool people to show up, you’d work in promotions. If the club had a bad case of salmonella poisoning, you’d be in public relations if you provide information about how that club is taking steps to prevent more food poisoning.
Generally at Universities, these would be in two different departments. Sometimes the Public Relations department is connected to the Journalism department, so check there too. Promotions would be something you’d learn if you were in the Business school, and studied Marketing. Check out your school’s departments and make appointments to meet with some professors to talk about your career goals.
The other thing you might try is to get an internship at a local club - even if you have to work for free. I live in LA, and promotions (especially for clubs!) is really hard to get into. It takes experience, personality, and the ability to get to know lots of people (and get their cell numbers!). The best way to do this is start early!
Contact some local clubs and ask who promotes them. Tell them you’re a student and you want to learn more about this career and you’d LOVE to chat with their promotor to learn how they got into the business. You might be able to get their contact info.
Good luck!
